Overview:

As part of my Master of Science in Web Design and Development capstone project, I explored one of the most common pain points in the web industry: websites becoming outdated shortly after launch. My project, Trend.js, proposes a new JavaScript framework built on Angular that helps developers keep websites contemporary by integrating the latest design and functionality trends. Trend.js was designed not only as a framework but as a living ecosystem-a tool, community, and business model working together to extend the lifespan of websites and reduce the need for costly redesigns.

Challenge:

Websites often go untouched for years after launch, leading to outdated designs, stale user experiences, and eventually complete redesigns that consume significant time and money. Developers lack tools that make it easy to implement new design or functionality trends quickly across multiple sites. My challenge was to identify why websites age so rapidly and how to build a scalable solution that helps developers keep them fresh in a streamlined, sustainable way.

Approach:

Through extensive research, I examined the relationship between web longevity, user experience, and design trends. I compared the top three JavaScript frameworks-React, Vue, and Angular-to determine which would best support a modular system of trend-based updates. Angular proved to be the strongest candidate for Trend.js due to its component structure, API efficiency, and scalability.

Using this foundation, I conceptualized Trend.js as:

A Tool - A modular framework that lets developers plug in new design or functionality components based on current web trends.

A Community - An online hub where developers can share ideas, vote on upcoming trends, and learn from others' implementations.

A Business - A model that supports the ongoing development, research, and maintenance of Trend.js components.

This three-part ecosystem was designed to ensure that websites remain relevant, functional, and engaging long after their initial build.

Outcome:

The result of my research was a fully theorized and documented framework that bridges the gap between static development and evolving web design. Trend.js presents a new way of thinking about website sustainability-one where trends are integrated continuously, rather than in costly cycles. The project culminated in a comprehensive academic paper and a recorded presentation, demonstrating both the technical architecture and business viability of the Trend.js model.

This capstone represents a milestone in my career-it not only showcases my ability to research, design, and conceptualize innovative web solutions but also reflects my drive to push the boundaries of how websites can evolve over time.
